What is an Adjective?

An Adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun.

For example:

      1.   John is wearing a red shirt.

In this sentence ‘red’ is an adjective as it describes the noun ‘shirt’ by telling ‘what kind of shirt is it? (Here it is red)

      2.   We have purchased a round table.

In this sentence ‘round’ is an adjective as it describes the noun ‘table’ by telling ‘what kind of table is it? (Here it is round)

 Kinds of Adjectives

 

  Adjective of Quality

  • Adjective of quality tells what kind of noun or pronoun is.
  • It describes characteristic of a noun or pronoun.

For Example

      1.   It is a tall tree.

      2.   It was a rainy day.

      3.   Mrs James is a nice lady.

      4.  Mumbai is a big city.

      5.   This movie is based on a true story.

      6.   My sister is very pretty.

      7.   I am learning French language.

Adjective of Quantity

  • Adjectives of Quantity tell us how much of things.
  •  It tells us approximate amount not the exact number of a noun
  • example- much, a little, some, any, no, most, half, all, whole, sufficient, enough, few, great etc.
  •  Adjectives of quantity are followed by singular uncountable nouns.

For example:

      1.   He ate the whole cake.

      2.   Children finished most of the ice cream.

      3.   How much money do you need?

      4.   We had so much fun in Goa last year.

      5.   I have enough time to complete this work.

      6.   Give me little water.

      7.   Ria have bought some new dresses.

Adjective of Number

  • Adjectives of Quantity tell us how many of things.
  • It tells us the exact number of a noun
  • example- one, two, three, four, first, second, third etc.

For example:

      1.  He has three cars.

      2.   The first boy in the row is wearing red hat.

      3.   Five laborers are absent today.

      4.   Give me one chocolate, please.

      5.   I have scored hundred marks in math.

      6.   Pass me one glass of water.

      7.   Ria have bought ten new dresses.

Demonstrative Adjective

  • Adjectives of Quantity point out a particular noun or pronoun
  • Example- this, that, these, those, Former, Latter,such,certain etc.

For example:

      1.   There are some big farms that side of the forest.

      2.   These flowers are very beautiful.

      3.   Give me those flowers.

      4.   The latter option is not so good.

      5.   I hate such people.

      6.   Certain situations are out of our control.

      7.   I want eat these cookies.

Interrogative Adjective

  • Interrogative Adjectives are used to ask questions about noun or in relation to noun
  • Example- what, which, whose, how, why etc.

For example:

      1.   Whose sister is she?

      2.   Whose note book is this?

      3.   Which Car is yours?

      4.   Which Chocolates do you want to buy?

      5.   Which is your favorite author?

      6.   What color is your Dress?

      7.   What did you eat in breakfast today?
