What is Adverb ?
A
word which adds something to the meaning of a verb, and tells us
- how a
thing is done,
- when it is done,
- where it is done,
- or how often (how many times) is it done
Types of Adverbs
There are 4 main types of Adverbs.
- Adverbs of Manner.
- Adverbs of Time
- Adverbs of Place.
- Adverbs of Frequency.
Adverbs of Manner.
Read the following sentences.
1. He drives carefully.
2. She spoke softly.
3. Girl runs quickly.
4. She writes neatly.
The highlighted words carefully, softly, quickly and neatly add something to the meaning of the verbs drives, spoke, runs and writes. They tell us how an action is done.
Words that tell us how an action is done are called Adverbs of Manner.
Adverbs of Time .
1. She got up early.
2. I saw her today.
3. My mom came late.
4. I went to the doctor yesterday.
The highlighted words early, today, late and yesterday add something to the meaning of the verbs got up, saw, came and went. They tell us when the action is done.
Words that tell us when the action is done are called Adverbs of Time .
Adverbs of Place.
1. The boys are playing upstairs.
2. It is very sunny outside.
3. He lives here.
4. The bottle is there.
The highlighted words upstairs, outside, here and there add something to the meaning of the verbs are playing, is, lives and is. They tell us where the action is done.
Words that tell us where the action is done are called Adverbs of Place.
Adverbs of Frequency.
Read the following sentences.
1. I meet him daily.
2. She is always ready to help.
3. He usually comes late at night.
4. We often go to visit Grandmom.
The highlighted words daily, always, usually and often add
something to the meaning of the verbs meet to help, comes,go.
They tell us how often (or how many times ) an action is done.
Words that tell us how often (or how many times ) an action is done are called Adverbs of Frequency.
