What are Nouns?

  • Nouns are the words that names people, place, animal and things.
  •  Around us we see so many things.
  • Everything that we see has some name.
  • Example: computer, blackboard, chalk, book, teacher etc.

Noun - Common Noun and Proper Noun

Common Noun

  • Common nouns are the general or generic name of person, place, animal and things.
  • Example: tree, man, mountain, box etc.
  • Common noun is only capitalized if it is part of a title or it is used in the beginning of sentence.

Proper Noun


  • Proper nouns are the specific or particular name of person, place, animal and things.
  • Example: Dia, Mt. Everest, Delhi etc.
  •  Proper noun is always capitalized.
Let’s notice the difference in the below table:

  • Common noun refers to things in general where as Proper Noun refers to a specific thing.
  • Example : in the above table , first row is of jeans. When we say jeans ( it can be any jeans of any size , brand or color) but when we say Denim ( it refers to jeans which is of only Denim Brand). So jeans - Common Noun, Denim - Proper Noun.
