What is an Adjective ?

  • Describing words are called adjectives.
  • An adjective is a word used to describe a noun.
Read the following sentences.

1. The sun is hot.

2. There is a brown dog.

3. The box is heavy.

4. The sky is blue.

5. Her sandals are dirty.

The words sun, dog, box, sky and sandals are nouns.

The words hot, brown, heavy, blue and dirty describes the nouns. They are, therefore, called describing words.
