What are Interjections ?

  • Interjections are words used to express some sudden feeling or emotion.
  • They are included in a sentence usually at the start to express a sentiment such as surprise, disgust, joy, excitement, or enthusiasm.
  • We always put on exclamation mark (!) after an Interjection.
Below is the list of some interjections with their meaning and uses.

A) Wow – expresses surprise or appreciation
  1. Wow! That’s really great news!
  2. Wow! What a beautiful car!
  3. Wow! You are looking gorgeous.
B) Ouch – expresses pain or displeasure.
  1. Ouch! It hurts.
  2. Ouch! It's very paining.
  3. Ouch! That hurts me.
C) Oops –expresses a negative reaction to having done something wrong by accident.
  1. Oops, I knocked your cup over.
  2. Oops, I just spilled my glass of milk all over the table.
  3. Oops! I did it again!
D) Hurrah - expresses sudden joy at a particular outcome.
  1. Hurrah! We won the game!
  2. Hurrah! I cleared the exam.
  3. Hurray! We have holiday tomorrow.
E) Alas – expresses grief or pity.
  1. Alas! I failed the test!
  2. Alas! The poor cat is badly hurt.
  3. Alas! I’m lost in this jungle.
F) Oh –expresses surprise or pleading or pain.
  1. Oh! What a gadget.
  2. Oh! She is here.
  3. Oh! Please say 'yes'.
G) Bravo –expresses admiration.
  1. Bravo! That was a great goal.
  2. Bravo! Well hit.
  3. Bravo! You have done a nice work.
H) Eek – expresses unpleasant surprise.
  1. Eek! Snake moved.
  2. Eek! A mouse!
I) Hello – expresses greeting or surprise.
  1. Hello! How are you?
  2. Hello! What are you doing here?
  3. Hello! My name is Tom.
J) Look out - used to warn somebody to be careful, especially when there is danger.
  1. Look out! There’s a truck coming.Look out! He's got a gun.
  2. Look out! Mam is coming back.
K) Hush – used to make (someone) be quiet or stop talking.
  1. Hush! Dad is sleeping.
  2. Hush! Don’t make a noise.
  3. Hush! The movie is about to start.
